Profile
Following completing my 6 year MBBS qualification as a doctor at University of Melbourne in 1975 (in which I ranked 2nd out of over 200 students) which included 3 years of clinical training I did 2 further years rotating through general medical and surgical positions at Royal Melbourne, Royal Children’s and Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospitals.
I then commenced another 4 years of specialty training as an Anaesthetist at Royal Melbourne, Royal Children’s, Royal Women’s and St Vincent’s Hospitals in Melbourne. During my anaesthetic training I was awarded the Renton Prize (top candidate in Australasia) in the First Part Anaesthetic Specialist examination and completed my anaesthetic training at the age of28, receiving Consultant Specialist recognition in January 1981, becoming a Fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FFARACS).
I then worked for 12 months as an Instructor in Anaesthesia at Harvard University in Boston following which I returned to Australia. Australian anaesthesia in general has the best statistics for safety worldwide and Australian Anaesthetic Training is widely recognized as the highest quality possible (for example our training is far longer and more rigorous than that of U.S. Anaesthetists.
Since that time I have held appointments at various times at public Hospitals including Alfred, Austin, St Vincent’s and still currently hold Consultant Anaesthetist positions at Royal Melbourne and Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospitals, at which I participate in training new Anaesthetists. However a substantial part of my working week is in Private Anaesthetic Practice in various private hospitals in Melbourne.
In 1992 the peak training and qualifying body, The Faculty of Anaesthetists of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons changed its name to the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists and so my qualification was reissued as Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA).
I regularly attend Anaesthetic educational conferences and practical workshops as well as reading widely on the latest developments in the fast evolving world of modern Anaesthesia and have continuously met all requirements for continuing training, education and recertification of The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
Although my practice is extremely broad I have a special interest and specific additional expertise in Anaesthesia for Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat surgery as well as Orthopaedic surgery. I pride myself in particular in caring empathically for all my patients including children and the elderly for whom the stress of preparing for and undergoing a surgical event cannot be underestimated.
